Nigeria will begin the fasting month of Ramadan on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, following the official sighting of the new moon.

The announcement was made in a press release issued by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with the National Moonsighting Committee.

According to the statement, the new moon of Ramadan 1447AH was sighted on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Sha’aban 1447AH.

His Eminence, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, accepted the reports and formally declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan.

The Sultan congratulated the Nigerian Muslim community and prayed for Allah’s guidance and blessings throughout the holy month.

He also urged Muslims to continue praying for peace, unity, and national development as they observe the sacred period of fasting, reflection, and charity.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed worldwide by Muslims through fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayers, and acts of charity.

The month will conclude with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting period.
