The Nigerian Bar Association has raised concern over a reported incident at the Federal High Court.

The incident reportedly involved Mohammed Umar and lawyer Marshall Abubakar during court proceedings in Abuja.

Reports said the judge ordered the lawyer to kneel after he raised his voice while addressing the court.

The lawyer appeared as defence counsel for activist Omoyele Sowore during the proceedings at the Federal High Court.

The NBA said the development raises serious concerns about courtroom conduct and the dignity of the legal profession.

According to the association, judges have authority to maintain order and discipline within their courtrooms.

However, the NBA said such authority must always follow established legal procedures and judicial standards.

The association noted that ordering a lawyer to kneel is not recognised as a lawful judicial sanction.

It said any allegation of contempt should follow proper legal procedures designed to protect fairness and individual dignity.

The NBA also reminded lawyers to maintain professionalism, respect and restraint when addressing the court.

It stated that disagreements with judges should always be expressed through proper legal channels.

The association stressed that mutual respect between the Bench and the Bar remains essential for justice.

The NBA therefore urged calm while calling for grievances to be addressed through appropriate legal mechanisms.
