The Media Rights Agenda has criticised the Federal Government over inadequate funding for the Freedom of Information Act.

The group said over 99 percent of public institutions lack dedicated funds to implement the FOI Act.

In a report, MRA revealed that only 13 ministries, departments and agencies made provisions for FOI-related activities.

The total allocation for FOI implementation was put at ₦191.1 million.

This represents just 0.00033 percent of the ₦58.47 trillion 2026 federal budget.

MRA described the situation as a threat to transparency and accountability.

Deputy Executive Director Ayode Longe said proper implementation requires adequate funding.

He noted that lack of funding leads to poor record-keeping and delayed responses to information requests.

The group accused the government of fostering a culture of secrecy in governance.

It also criticised the Office of the Attorney-General for failing to allocate funds for FOI oversight.

MRA called on the National Assembly to reject budgets without FOI provisions.

The organisation also proposed the creation of a dedicated FOI oversight fund.

It urged stronger enforcement of transparency laws across public institutions.
