Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State, has resigned from his position as Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a letter dated November 17, 2025, addressed to BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi explained that his decision was driven by the emergence of Kabiru Turaki, also from the North-West geopolitical zone, as the party’s new national chairman.
Makarfi noted that he had initially tried to step down about two months ago, but was persuaded by Wabara and other party leaders to remain until after the national convention.
He reiterated a long-standing principle: the national chairman and the BoT secretary should not hail from the same geopolitical zone. According to him, his continued presence in office alongside Turaki could create “an impression of imbalance” in the party’s leadership structure.
Makarfi’s resignation is effective immediately. In his letter, he expressed gratitude to Wabara and other board members for a “very respectful” working relationship during his tenure.
The move comes amid heightened internal PDP tensions: the Wike-aligned faction has called an emergency BoT and NEC meeting, further underscoring the party’s fragile balance.
