Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially bowed out as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after completing two consecutive terms in office.

Yakubu, who first assumed office in 2015, served a total of 10 years — two five-year terms — overseeing the conduct of two general elections during his tenure.

On Tuesday, he handed over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head for the electoral body.

In his farewell remarks, Yakubu urged the management and staff of the commission to extend full cooperation to the Acting Chairman to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in the commission’s activities.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce Yakubu’s successor soon, with the appointment of a new INEC Chairman expected to top discussions at the forthcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for later this week.
