Fresh warnings have raised concern over possible flooding in Kogi State as weather conditions begin to shift across the region.

Recent updates from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency show that rising rainfall and changing climate patterns could put many communities at risk.

Kogi’s location makes it one of the most flood-prone states in Nigeria. The state lies where the River Niger meets the River Benue. When water levels rise in both rivers, nearby towns and villages can quickly become flooded.

Authorities have listed several high-risk areas, including Ibaji, Lokoja, Idah, Igalamela Odolu, and Koton Karfe. Other places like Ajaokuta, Bassa, Ofu, and Omala also face repeated flood threats whenever heavy rains begin.

Experts warn that even short rainfall, like the storms expected today, March 26, can lead to flash floods in low-lying areas. Some communities may face serious flooding if water levels continue to rise.

In response, the state emergency team has stepped up preparations. Officials have set up over 40 camps to shelter people who may need to leave their homes. The goal is to reduce damage and protect lives as the rainy season approaches.

Residents in affected areas are advised to act early. They should move away from riverbanks, clear blocked drainage, and follow official updates. People are also encouraged to prepare emergency plans in case evacuation becomes necessary.

As climate conditions continue to change, Kogi residents must stay alert and take safety warnings seriously to avoid loss of lives and property.
