Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, has ordered former New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) local government chairmen in his district to return vehicles previously provided to them for party activities. This directive followed their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The instruction was issued in a letter dated January 28, 2026, signed by the Secretary to the Senator’s Office, Engr. Ibrahim Nakwalli Kawaji.
The vehicles are to be handed back to the senator’s office between January 28 and January 30, and will be held there “pending resolution of the party’s internal matters.”
This applies to chairmen in all 15 local government areas within the Kano Central Senatorial District.
This move comes on the heels of a major political shift in Kano State, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other key NNPP figures defected to the APC last week, including lawmakers and local government chairmen across the state.
Some critics, including observers on social media, describe the demand as unusual and inconsistent with past political practice in the state.
A political figure known as AA Zaura reportedly offered to provide replacement vehicles for the affected chairmen if the senator insists on reclaiming the original ones, suggesting a contest over political optics and support. The recall of vehicles is symbolic of the broader political tussle in Kano’s evolving landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with defections and realignments reshaping party structures.
