Kaduna Launches ₦720 Million Programme to Tackle Poverty

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has launched the Kaduna State Ultra-Poor Graduation Programme (KADUPG) — a major social intervention designed to lift vulnerable citizens out of extreme poverty through a combination of financial support, skills training, and mentoring.

Speaking at the official launch on Tuesday, Governor Sani described the initiative as a “transformative model for inclusive growth,” aimed at helping residents attain long-term economic independence and dignity.

Implemented through the Kaduna State Social Investment Programme Agency (KADSIPA), KADUPG targets individuals living on less than $3 a day, identified through the Kaduna State Social Register — one of Nigeria’s most comprehensive data-driven poverty mapping systems.

In its first phase, the programme will support 2,400 beneficiaries across the state, each receiving up to ₦300,000 in seed capital and business support.

The intervention combines skills acquisition, financial literacy training, business mentorship, and market access, making it a pathway to sustainable livelihoods rather than temporary relief.

Governor Sani said the programme reinforces his administration’s commitment to social protection and human capital development, with a special focus on women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

The Governor also expressed appreciation to development partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), Village Enterprise, AMA Foundation, and civil society groups, for their technical and financial support in shaping the initiative.

Stakeholders at the launch commended Kaduna’s data-driven approach to poverty reduction, describing KADUPG as a model for evidence-based social policy in Nigeria.
