A senior commander of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has reportedly been killed during internal clashes among the paramilitary group in the Darfur region, local sources have said.
Sources said Abdullah Abu al-Qasim, commander of the RSF’s Sha’iriya sector, died during fighting that broke out in the Khazan area late on Sunday.
The clashes reportedly began around 8:00pm local time and were triggered by internal leadership disputes within the RSF.
Several casualties were recorded during the fighting, though the exact number of those killed or injured remains unclear.
Abu al-Qasim, popularly known as “Dawli,” was a prominent RSF field commander in the area and a brother to Muhammad Abu al-Qasim, the Nazir (tribal chief) of the Birgid tribe.
The RSF has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Sudan has been mired in conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces, plunging much of the country, including Darfur, into prolonged violence and instability.
