Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai has cautioned that ending insurgency in Nigeria quickly is unrealistic.

Speaking in an interview on Abuja Politics Today, he called the idea of overnight elimination of insurgent groups “wishful thinking.”

Buratai explained that insurgency is deeply rooted in ideology and belief systems. He said this makes it more complicated than conventional conflicts.

“These are people with ideology and beliefs,” he said, adding that tackling such threats requires sustained, multifaceted efforts beyond military action.

He stressed that long-term solutions should include intelligence gathering, community engagement, and ideological countermeasures.

These steps are essential to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
