The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended his predecessor, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for what he described as landmark contributions to the development of Nigeria’s media sector.

Idris made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book titled “Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration,” authored by the former Minister.

According to him, some of the most significant milestones recorded under Lai Mohammed’s tenure include Nigeria’s hosting of the International Press Institute (IPI) World Congress in 2018 and the successful bid to host the UNESCO Category Two Media and Information Literacy Institute.

He said Nigeria hosted the IPI World Congress for the first time during Lai Mohammed’s tenure, bringing editors and media leaders from across the world to the country.

The Minister also disclosed that the process leading to Nigeria hosting the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Institute was initiated by his predecessor, noting that the project was recently completed under his watch.

Idris described Lai Mohammed as a distinguished public servant with an extensive record, having served for over a decade as opposition spokesperson before spending eight years as Minister of Information, the longest tenure in the country’s political history.

He said the role of Information Minister is one of the most demanding in government, requiring tact, resilience and exceptional communication skills, adding that he has drawn valuable lessons from his predecessor.

Idris further praised Lai Mohammed for documenting his public service experiences in book form, saying it would serve as a valuable resource for future generations.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including former All Progressives Congress Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, and family members of the former minister.
