The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered two new political parties as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, announced at the commission’s quarterly consultative meeting in Abuja that: The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has been officially registered after meeting all constitutional and statutory requirements. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was also registered following a Federal High Court order directing INEC to recognise the party.
With the addition of DLA and NDC, Nigeria now has 21 registered political parties. The growth reflects continuing efforts to deepen democratic participation and political pluralism ahead of national polls.
INEC revealed it received 171 letters of intent from groups seeking party registration. These went through screening under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s regulations. Only two successfully met all legal requirements and final verification standards.
The NDC’s registration came not just from administrative approval but also through compliance with a ** Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja showing how legal directives can shape Nigeria’s political party framework.
The move signals INEC’s readiness for the 2027 elections and highlights ongoing reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s political processes. It also points to growing democratic engagement as more Nigerians seek alternatives within the political system.
