A delegation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters has met with Electoral Officers and transport union leaders in Anambra State as part of preparations for the November 8, 2025, governorship election.

The team, which included four National Commissioners, held an assessment and readiness session with the 21 Electoral Officers (EOs) from all local government areas of the state at the INEC headquarters in Awka.

The National Commissioner supervising Anambra State, Dr. Kenneth Ukeagu, commended the officers for their past efforts and urged them to maintain professionalism and commitment under the incoming INEC leadership.

He stressed the importance of early activation of Registration Area Centres (RACs), efficient deployment of poll officials, and adherence to logistics timelines. “Ensure all polling units open on time, vehicles are properly arranged, and materials are returned promptly after the elections,” he said.

The National Commissioner in charge of Election Planning and Monitoring, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, advised the officers to take full ownership of their duties, ensure proper handling of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, and conduct refresher trainings for ad-hoc staff.

Similarly, Dr. Baba Bila, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Operations and Logistics Committee, reminded the officers of their accountability. “Delegated authority comes with responsibility. Transportation must comply with the Memorandum of Understanding with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Maintain a checklist and ensure accurate reverse logistics,” he stated.

On his part, Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), charged the officers to maintain integrity and transparency in all their activities.

Following the meeting with Electoral Officers, the delegation also engaged with leaders of transport unions, including the NURTW, National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Anambra State chapters.

Dr. Ukeagu urged the transport leaders to ensure efficiency in the movement of election materials and warned against any act capable of disrupting logistics operations. He assured them of prompt payment for services rendered.

A representative of the transport unions expressed appreciation for INEC’s continued partnership and pledged their commitment to support the Commission in ensuring smooth logistics during the election.

The engagements are part of INEC’s ongoing efforts to ensure transparency, efficiency, and credibility in the conduct of the forthcoming Anambra governorship poll.
