President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after attending the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Meeting in Rome, Italy, where world leaders discussed strategies to strengthen global and regional cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.

The Aqaba Process, launched in 2015 by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, is a counter-terrorism initiative co-chaired by Jordan and Italy. The Rome session focused on improving coordination and intelligence sharing, with a particular emphasis on the security situation in West Africa.

The meeting, held on October 15 at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, was attended by King Abdullah II, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Presidents of Nigeria, Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo, among other leaders.

On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Meloni and Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs. He also met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, where discussions centered on promoting religious harmony and countering disinformation about religious intolerance in Nigeria.

Since its inception, the Aqaba Process has convened 33 meetings across various levels — from heads of state summits to expert sessions — focusing on prevention, coordination, and closing operational gaps in counterterrorism responses.
