Kano State has recorded a major breakthrough in climate governance, moving from 35th position last year to 4th place in the 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking.

The ranking, unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja, marks one of the most dramatic improvements ever achieved by any state in Nigeria’s environmental performance index.

In a statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the development reflects the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has made environmental sustainability and climate resilience central to his administration’s policy agenda.

Representing the Governor at the unveiling, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, said the recognition affirms Kano’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible environmental management.

He highlighted key initiatives driving the improvement, including the Kano State Climate Change Policy, deployment of renewable energy systems in public institutions, urban greening and beautification projects, and large-scale afforestation and erosion control programmes under the state’s Urban Renewal initiative.

At the ceremony, Samantha Harrison, First Secretary for Climate Diplomacy at the British High Commission, presented the certificate of recognition to the Kano State Government in acknowledgment of its remarkable progress.

Governor Yusuf commended the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Department of Climate Change, and development partners for their support, particularly the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), the University of Bristol (UK), and the UK-FCDO Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE).

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient Kano, describing the recognition as “a collective achievement of the government and people of the state.”
