Tinubu Mourns Former Foreign Affairs Minister Joy Ogwu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, who passed away at the age of 79.

Ambassador Ogwu, an accomplished diplomat and scholar, represented Nigeria at the United Nations between May 2008 and May 2017, during which she twice presided over the UN Security Council in July 2010 and October 2011.

Before her diplomatic tenure, she served as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she made notable contributions to the development of Nigeria’s foreign policy and international relations scholarship.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late Ambassador as a trailblazer who rose to the peak of her career through excellence and hard work.

The President lauded Ogwu’s service to the nation, noting that she projected Nigeria’s voice “with clarity and purpose” and worked tirelessly for global peace, disarmament, international security, and the advancement of women’s rights.

He extended his condolences to her five children, grandchildren, siblings, and the wider diplomatic and academic community, praying for the repose of her soul and comfort for all who mourn her passing.
