The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike, directing all its members across the country to withdraw their services effective midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025.

President of the union, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press conference held on Sunday at ASUU’s National Secretariat, University of Abuja.

According to him, the strike action follows what the union described as the government’s insincerity in addressing lingering issues affecting public universities and the failure to meet previously agreed-upon demands.

Piwuna said the two-week warning strike would serve as a window for the Federal Government to conclude ongoing negotiations with the union and implement key aspects of their agreement.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th of September 2025,” Piwuna stated.

He further directed all ASUU branches nationwide to comply fully with the industrial action, warning that continued government neglect of the education sector could lead to a full-scale strike.

The development marks yet another round of confrontation between the union and the Federal Government, despite ongoing negotiations aimed at averting disruptions in the academic calendar of public universities.

ASUU has long demanded improvements in funding for university education, lecturers’ welfare, and university autonomy, among other issues.
