Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has shared why she has repeatedly declined marriage proposals and why being single is not something she views as a shortcoming.
Refusing Proposals Because She Values Authenticity
At 52 years old, Akintola says she has been proposed to multiple times. Yet each time, she turned them down because none of the proposals came from someone she felt was the right partner. She believes marriage is too significant a commitment to rush into, particularly under societal pressure.
She pointed out that many people marry simply because “everyone says marry” without considering what a real, lasting relationship requires. The actress warned that many marriages today break down quickly, partly due to hasty decisions made to meet expectations rather than true readiness.
The Loss That Shaped Her View
Akintola also revealed that her decision to stay single is deeply influenced by the loss of someone she considered her “forever love.” She says it took a long time to find that person, and losing them has meant she has not yet found another relationship where she could sincerely see a forever.
Standing Firm Against Societal Expectations
Despite repeated calls and cultural expectations, Akintola makes it clear she does not view being unmarried as a failure. She resists pressure to marry simply to appease others, insisting that one should only tie the knot when there is mutual, wholehearted commitment.
In her view, marriage should be entered into with intentionality, not as a checkbox of social acceptance. She warns that when people rush, marriages can dissolve almost as soon as they are celebrated.
Advice & Personal Philosophy
Bimbo Akintola strongly believes that entering a relationship, especially one as serious as marriage should never be rushed. She encourages women to wait for a partner who truly aligns with their values and life goals, someone they can genuinely envision building a future with.
In her view, parenting should involve raising children with equal expectations of accountability, regardless of gender. Boys and girls alike, she insists, must be taught that respect, responsibility, and emotional intelligence are not gender-specific traits but essential human values.
When it comes to choosing a life partner, Akintola emphasizes character over material wealth. For her, integrity, work ethic, and emotional compatibility far outweigh any flashy status or riches. It’s about finding someone who enriches your life in meaningful, lasting ways.
Akintola remains open to marriage if she ever finds someone she feels she could genuinely commit to forever. Age, to her, is not the barrier; integrity, shared values, and readiness are what matter.
