The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the government explained that the decision does not diminish the importance of the milestone. Rather, it reflects the administration’s commitment to celebrating the anniversary with dignity while focusing on ongoing reforms.
“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.
The Federal Government clarified that while the traditional parade has been called off, all other activities lined up for the anniversary will proceed as scheduled. These include official ceremonies, cultural events, and presidential engagements designed to highlight the country’s progress and challenges since independence in 1960.
Authorities expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the change, appealing for the understanding and cooperation of citizens, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.
The statement further urged Nigerians to continue supporting the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, describing them as critical steps toward building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“The Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” it added.
This year’s independence celebrations come at a time of significant political and economic reforms by the Tinubu administration, including policies aimed at stabilizing the naira, revamping the energy sector, and strengthening democratic institutions.
While the cancellation of the parade marks a departure from Nigeria’s traditional Independence Day celebrations, the Federal Government assured that the spirit of unity, resilience, and national pride will continue to define the commemoration of the nation’s 65th anniversary.
