Imo at 50: Shettima Hails State’s National Contributions

Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised Imo State for its contributions to Nigeria’s political, intellectual, and economic development over the past 50 years.

Shettima spoke on Saturday at the golden jubilee celebration marking the creation of Imo State in 1976.

He conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goodwill and assured the state of continued federal government support.

However, he described Imo as a critical partner in Nigeria’s progress, citing its leadership legacy, intellectual influence, and economic strengths.

Praising Governor Hope Uzodimma, describing him as a transformative leader who restored discipline, planning, and institutional strength to governance in the state.

Shettima credited the governor with repositioning Imo as a state ready for relevance in national affairs.

He traced Imo’s political legacy from Dr. Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe to former Governor Sam Mbakwe and former Governor Rochas Okorocha.

The Vice President highlighted the state’s cultural influence through figures such as novelist Flora Nwapa, Nollywood actors Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, and Kanayo O. Kanayo, and musician Onyeka Onwenu.

On the economy, Shettima noted Imo’s agricultural strengths, especially palm oil production, and its commercial hubs including Nkwo Orji and Orlu International Market.

He also cited emerging opportunities in oil and gas, agro-processing, renewable energy, tourism, and the digital economy.

Governor Uzodimma said Imo would embrace digital transformation and sustained growth in the coming decades.

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku and other dignitaries commended the state’s progress and urged continued unity and development.
