Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health concerns. His resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Abubakar’s service to the country. The President is expected to forward a nomination for a new Defence Minister to the Senate later this week.

Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, as part of President Tinubu’s first cabinet.

His exit comes at a time when the Federal Government has declared a national security emergency in response to rising security challenges across parts of the country. The Presidency says further details about the scope of the security emergency will be announced in due course.
