The National Forum of Former Legislators has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections, adopting him as its sole presidential candidate.

The endorsement was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s National Summit held in Abuja.

The group also urged the National Assembly to amend the 1999 Constitution to formally entrench rotational presidency as a mechanism for promoting national unity and equitable political representation.

The National Forum of Former Legislators comprises former federal and state lawmakers, including past presiding officers, who convene to contribute their legislative experience to national development and governance discourse.

Speaking on the summit theme, “National Unity and Nation Building: Beyond 2031,” participants stressed the need for political cohesion, inclusive governance and sustainable reforms to ensure Nigeria’s long-term stability.

Several speakers at the summit described national unity as critical to Nigeria’s survival, noting that justice, equity and power rotation remain central to strengthening trust among the country’s diverse regions and ethnic groups.

The Forum said its decision to back President Tinubu’s re-election was based on what it described as his administration’s socio-economic reforms, which it credited with improving security, political stability and constitutional governance.

In addition to the endorsement, the group called for greater involvement of former legislators in the ongoing constitutional review process, arguing that their institutional experience could add value to law reform and national policy development.

The communiqué concluded with a call on political stakeholders to prioritize unity, democratic stability and inclusive governance as the country prepares for future electoral cycles.
