A Nigerian traveler has raised serious concerns about racial profiling at Bole International Airport, after what he described as an unfair and discriminatory experience.

The incident happened shortly after he arrived in Addis Ababa  from São Paulo. According to his account, security officers stopped him and a few others near the aircraft exit and asked them to step aside for passport checks.

He said he quickly noticed a pattern all the passengers held back were Black travelers. This raised concerns about selective screening and possible bias.

The situation became more troubling when one of the officers reportedly linked Nigerians to drug trafficking without any form of search or evidence. The traveler challenged the claim, asking why he was judged without proper checks.

Moments later, the officers allowed him to proceed after offering an apology. However, the traveler stressed that the apology did not erase the damage caused by the profiling.

This incident has sparked wider conversations about stereotypes attached to Nigerians abroad.

Experts say profiling based on nationality or race is not only unfair but also weakens trust in security systems. They argue that proper screening should rely on intelligence and procedure, not generalizations.

The traveler also expressed disappointment that the incident happened within Africa. He noted that Africans, who often face discrimination globally, should not repeat the same behavior among themselves.

The case has drawn attention to the need for better training and accountability for airport staff. And authorities must address bias and ensure that all passengers receive fair treatment.

There are also renewed calls for stronger efforts by Nigerian institutions to protect citizens abroad and improve the country’s global image.

As conversations continue, many Nigerians say one message is clear  dignity and respect must apply to everyone, regardless of nationality.
