The Federal Government has commenced the rollout of a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic network across Nigeria, a move aimed at expanding broadband access and improving internet speed, communication, and digital connectivity nationwide.

Speaking at the 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week in Ogun State, the Special Adviser to the President on Information Communication and Security, Senator Shuaib Salis, described the project as a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation agenda.

Salis said the initiative will ensure that every state, local government, and ward benefits from the network, noting that research has shown a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration can significantly boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He was joined by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, as both officials highlighted the government’s efforts to attract global investors to Nigeria’s digital economy.

Salis, however, cautioned that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses emerging challenges to journalism and called for an urgent review of media training curricula to uphold professionalism in the AI-driven information age.
