Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has died in Saudi Arabia, about two weeks before his 72nd birthday.

The Bauchi-born jurist passed away after a prolonged illness, marking the end of a judicial career that took him to the highest office in Nigeria’s legal system.

Justice Muhammad, from Doguwa in Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State, rose through the ranks of the judiciary, serving as a High Court judge, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, and later a Justice of the Supreme Court.

In 2019, he became Nigeria’s 17th Chief Justice, following the controversial suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen.

His tenure as Chief Justice lasted three years and five months, a period marked by both institutional pressure and high expectations for judicial reform.

Known for his discipline and strict approach to procedure, Muhammad led the judiciary during a politically sensitive era.

In June 2022, he resigned on health grounds, stepping down 18 months before his mandatory retirement age.

His exit came amid an unprecedented crisis at the Supreme Court, after allegations by 14 fellow justices that court operations and judges’ welfare were being poorly funded, a development that exposed rare internal divisions within the apex court.

Despite the controversy, Justice Tanko Muhammad remained a respected figure in Nigeria’s legal community, his service was recognised with the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

Reacting to Justice Muhammad’s death, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed described him as a distinguished son of the state whose career reflected dedication, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law, praying for divine mercy and comfort for his family.

Justice Tanko Muhammad’s life reflects both the prestige and the pressures of Nigeria’s judiciary, leaving behind a legacy shaped by service, controversy, and enduring national relevance.
