Heavy security filled the streets of Kaduna on Tuesday as former governor Nasir El-Rufai arrived at the Federal High Court for his arraignment.

The case was brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commision (ICPC), which accused the former governor of financial misconduct while he was in office.

Armed security officers surrounded the court premises early in the day. Authorities tightened security to prevent any disruption as supporters and onlookers gathered outside. Journalists, however, were not allowed inside the courtroom.

El-Rufai appeared before the court alongside Joel Adoga. The commission filed charges that include alleged possession and conversion of public funds, as well as money laundering. The case marks the beginning of what could become a major legal battle.

In a separate move, the ICPC also filed another case against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule at the Kaduna State High Court. The charges in that case include abuse of office, fraud, and granting unfair advantage.

The anti-corruption agency said it filed both cases on March 18, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability in public service.

Court proceedings have started, while the hearing date for the second case is yet to be announced.
