Tension flared on Tuesday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, engaged police officers in a heated exchange during the ongoing “Occupy the National Assembly” protest.
Amaechi joined demonstrators demanding real-time electronic transmission of election results, following the Senate’s rejection of the proposal in the electoral reform process.
Youth-led protesters described the decision as a setback to credible elections and democratic transparency.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi had joined the protest a day earlier, as pressure mounts on lawmakers to reconsider their stance on e-transmission amid growing public concern over electoral integrity.
