Acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, has described Nigerian youths as increasingly impatient and overly eager to attain success without adequate preparation or willingness to learn.
Dr. Sadiq made the remarks during a recent interview with S24 in Abuja, in which he shared his views on the attitudes and roles of young people in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental processes.
According to him, many youths today are driven by the desire for quick success, sometimes leading to unhealthy competition and envy among themselves.
He explained that youths remain the backbone and pillar of development in any democratic society, stressing that their sheer numbers place a heavy responsibility on them.
“In every democracy, youths play a critical role because democracy is about numbers. In Nigeria, youths constitute about 65 percent of the population, which means they have the capacity to determine the direction of the country,” he said.
However, he expressed concern that the current disposition of many youths does not reflect the level of commitment required to drive national progress.
Despite his concerns, Dr. Sadiq encouraged young Nigerians not to lose hope but to channel their energy toward positive growth and national development.
He urged them to draw inspiration from past national leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and General Murtala Mohammed, who contributed immensely to Nigeria’s growth through discipline, vision, and selfless service.
Dr. Sadiq also advised youths to eschew money politics and instead focus on contributing meaningfully to nation-building.
He emphasized that with determination, discipline, and the right mindset, Nigerian youths have unlimited potential.
“The sky is their limit if they are ready to learn, remain patient, and work towards positive change that will move Nigeria forward,” he added.
