The Nigeria Customs Service has launched a three-day training programme to strengthen Nigeria’s implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The capacity-building workshop, which began on March 31 and ends April 2, 2026, focuses on Rules of Origin.

Officials say the training is designed to equip stakeholders with technical knowledge for intra-African trade.

Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi described the programme as critical to economic integration.

Represented by Nafiu Isiaku, he said Rules of Origin are key to trade transparency and competitiveness.

He noted that proper implementation will enhance trade preference and enforcement mechanisms.

National Coordinator of AfCFTA Olusegun Olutayo said the initiative marks a shift from policy to practical implementation.

He stressed that the agreement must deliver jobs, income and opportunities for Nigerians.

The programme also aims to increase awareness among businesses and improve compliance.

Development partners including the World Customs Organization and the European Union are supporting the initiative.

Participants have been urged to apply the knowledge gained to ensure Nigerian businesses remain competitive.

The training is expected to enhance Nigeria’s readiness to fully maximise AfCFTA opportunities.
