The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called on members of the 10th National Assembly to remain focused on governance, reforms and legislative responsibilities, warning against premature electioneering ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

In a statement as the 2026 legislative year begins, CISLAC said early campaign activities could weaken lawmaking, reduce productivity and distract lawmakers from addressing pressing national challenges.

The civil society group described 2026 as a defining year, noting that policies and reforms introduced since 2023 must now translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

CISLAC expressed concern over discussions suggesting that general elections could be held as early as November 2026, warning that such proposals may heighten public anxiety and undermine effective legislative work.

According to the organisation, Nigeria is grappling with rising insecurity, mounting public debt, economic hardship and declining public trust in institutions, challenges that require a fully functional, accountable and focused legislature.

It stressed that lawmakers should prioritise strong attendance at plenary sessions and committee engagements, accelerate key reforms in electoral processes, security, the economy and governance, and intensify oversight of budgets, public procurement and the use of public funds.

“Lawmakers were elected to serve the public interest, not to begin campaigning far ahead of the official election period,” the group stated.

CISLAC added that it remains committed to constructive engagement with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to strengthen democracy, accountability and good governance in Nigeria.
