Bandits attacked Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday, abducting more than 160 worshippers from three churches.

Local residents and church leaders raised alarm immediately after the attack, but the Nigeria Police Force initially denied that any abduction had taken place.

The police later confirmed the incident on Tuesday through spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, admitting that many worshippers were taken during the attack.

Following the confirmation, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) criticised the police over its handling of public communication surrounding the incident. In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the early dismissal of reports showed a lack of diligence and empathy.

According to CAN, the denial created confusion, heightened fear, and unfairly questioned the credibility of victims, families, clergy, and eyewitnesses who raised the alarm.

The association stressed that communication during crises must be guided by accuracy, empathy, and sensitivity to avoid undermining public trust.
While commending the Inspector-General of Police for deploying tactical and intelligence units to the area, CAN said security efforts must be matched with disciplined, people-focused communication.

CAN urged security agencies to improve coordination, strengthen verification processes, and treat credible reports from communities with seriousness.
It added that victims must be protected, genuine distress calls respected, and misinformation whether dismissive or sensational avoided.

Beyond the communication lapses, CAN called on governments at all levels to urgently address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, noting that repeated attacks continue to endanger lives and disrupt worship.
The association made a heartfelt appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted worshippers and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure their safe return.
