A Tsangaya (Qur’anic school) teacher in Malam Ibrahim Goni Maiduguri has called on the government to urgently strengthen security measures following a recent explosion that shook parts of the city, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.
Speaking in the aftermath of the incident, the teacher expressed deep concern over the safety of students and vulnerable communities, particularly children in informal learning centres such as Tsangaya schools. He noted that many of the pupils, often living in modest conditions, face heightened risks when security breaches occur.
“We are appealing to the authorities to intensify surveillance and protection across Maiduguri. Our children are innocent and deserve to learn in a safe environment,” he said.
The explosion, which reportedly occurred within the metropolitan area, has reignited concerns among residents about lingering security threats despite years of military operations against insurgent groups in Borno State.
Community members say the psychological impact of such incidents remains significant, especially for children who have grown up amid conflict. Many fear that without improved intelligence gathering, rapid-response systems, and a visible security presence, the situation could worsen.
Security experts have consistently emphasized the need for a multi-layered approach that combines community vigilance, technology-driven surveillance, and sustained collaboration between security agencies and local leaders.
Residents are also urging the federal and state governments to invest more in protective infrastructure around schools, markets, and densely populated neighborhoods to prevent future occurrences.
As Maiduguri continues its gradual recovery from years of insurgency, stakeholders say ensuring the safety of its people, particularly the most vulnerable, must remain a top priority.
