Tragedy marred Easter celebrations in Benue and Kaduna states as suspected armed herdsmen and terrorists killed at least 16 people.
In Benue State, nine residents of Agena community in Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area, were killed when more than 50 armed attackers invaded early Sunday. The assailants set homes, the local market, and food storage facilities on fire. Several people remain missing, while others were injured.
A local resident said the attackers fired at fleeing villagers, causing multiple casualties. Austin Awua, Security Adviser to the Gwer East Local Government Chairman, confirmed the incident and said security personnel had been deployed to prevent further violence.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack, calling it “barbaric and unacceptable,” and assured residents that authorities are working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, terrorists struck two worship centres in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area, during Easter services. At least seven people were killed, and several others were abducted.
The Nigerian Army responded swiftly, rescuing 31 abducted worshippers after engaging the attackers in a gun battle. Security sources said the terrorists retreated under pressure, abandoning the captives. Additional troops have been deployed to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges in parts of the country, despite continued military and police operations.
