Armed bandits attacked a wedding gathering in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing 13 people and abducting at least 28 others.
The attack happened around 11:47 p.m. on Sunday during a Bachelor’s Eve celebration. Witnesses said heavily armed gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire, throwing the community into chaos.
Guests ran for safety as gunfire continued. What began as a joyful celebration quickly turned into tragedy.
Local sources said 13 people died at the scene, while at least 10 others suffered gunshot wounds. Six victims are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Kagarko. Doctors moved four others in critical condition to specialist hospitals in Kaduna.
The attackers abducted about 28 people, including children, and forced them into nearby bush paths.
They also looted shops in the area, taking food supplies, provisions, and medical items before fleeing.
Residents said a vigilante group from the neighboring Kuratan community had earlier raised alarm over suspicious movements.
Some villagers fled after the warning, but others stayed at the event, unaware of the danger.
Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, and Senator Sani Musa visited the injured on Monday. They offered condolences and assessed the situation.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the attack. Authorities have deployed security personnel to the area and are working to rescue the abducted victims and track down the attackers.
The Kahir community is now in mourning as families bury their dead and wait for news of their missing loved ones.
