A massive rally tagged #OccupyINEC took place at Maitama Roundabout in Abuja. Leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside top opposition figures, protested recent decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Prominent figures at the rally included former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and Dino Melaye. Others were Rauf Aregbesola and Aminu Tambuwal. Hundreds of supporters from the Kwankwaso movement also joined the demonstration.
Protesters marched and chanted slogans to show their disapproval of INEC’s directive. The commission had refused to recognise communications from factions of the ADC amid its leadership crisis. As a result, demonstrators described the move as a threat to democracy.
“We say NO to a one-party system!” Peter Obi declared. He urged Nigerians to defend democracy, unity, and peace.
In a symbolic moment, demonstrators sang “Arise, O Compatriots,” Nigeria’s former national anthem. Although it was replaced in 2024, the song reflected their resistance and political frustration.
The protest followed INEC’s decision to stop recognizing party communications from rival ADC factions, including those linked to David Mark and Nafiu Bala. This move came after a Court of Appeal ruling on the party’s leadership dispute. However, ADC leaders and opposition groups insist the decision interferes with internal party affairs.
As debates over INEC’s role intensify, the #OccupyINEC protest highlights growing political tension. It also signals renewed efforts by opposition leaders to push for electoral fairness ahead of the 2027 elections.
