Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has backed the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors over unpaid allowances and welfare concerns.

Atiku criticised the Federal Government for failing to fully implement an agreement on the Professional Allowance Table.

He said resident doctors should not have to struggle for commitments already made by government.

According to him, doctors are working under difficult conditions in hospitals facing serious pressure.

He listed unresolved issues to include 19 months of unpaid professional allowance arrears and promotion arrears.

He also referenced delays affecting the Medical Residency Training Fund.

Atiku warned that poor welfare and broken agreements are worsening the migration of Nigerian doctors abroad.

He said every doctor lost to countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Saudi Arabia reflects leadership failure.

The former vice president urged the government to honour its obligations to health workers.

He said failure to do so could deepen the crisis in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Atiku also called for urgent action to prevent disruption of services in public hospitals.
