Amnesty International has commended Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for the swift dismissal of aides implicated in the assault of the councillor representing Shamaki Ward, Abdulrahman Abubakar Shariff.

The rights organisation described the decision as a welcome step that reinforces accountability and sends a strong message against human rights violations in the state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Amnesty International said the governor’s intervention demonstrates a commitment to curbing political intimidation and violence.

The group noted that the response could help deter political repression and increasing cases of thuggery across Gombe State.

The organisation called on security agencies to take immediate action against the suspected perpetrators, stressing the need for impartial investigation, arrest, and prosecution in accordance with the law.

Before the viral assault incident, Shariff was reportedly detained for four days by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Amnesty International said the involvement of the intelligence agency should serve as an entry point for a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the case.

The group further urged authorities to guarantee the safety of Shariff and his family, insisting that adequate protection must be provided while investigations and legal processes continue.
