In a historic academic breakthrough, Gombe State University has produced its first-ever First Class graduate from the Department of Political Science since the institution’s establishment 22 years ago.

The trailblazer, Maryam Usman, a 23-year-old indigene of Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State, achieved the remarkable feat with matriculation number UG20/ASPS/1062, becoming not only the first student but also the first female to graduate with a First Class degree in Political Science from the university.

Speaking about her achievement, Maryam expressed deep gratitude to Almighty Allah for what she described as a “gigantic record,” admitting that she never imagined graduating with such distinction.

She revealed that Political Science was not her initial choice of study, but that fate led her to the department.

“I never saw it coming. Political Science was not the course I originally wanted, but I was given admission to study it. The department is very rigid and challenging, but I gave it my best and remained hopeful. Today, I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.

Maryam attributed her success to the unwavering support of her family, friends, colleagues, and lecturers, noting that their encouragement was vital to her academic journey. “Without their support, I would not have achieved this huge record,” she added.

She also shared her long-term academic ambition, expressing hope of rising to the highest level in academia.  “One day, I want to see myself as a Professor of Political Science, if Allah permits.”

Maryam used the opportunity to encourage students across Nigerian universities to remain focused and committed to their goals.

She emphasized that success is achievable through dedication, discipline, and doing things the right way.

“Students should remain steadfast. Everything is possible when you are committed and do the right thing.”

She further commended the management of Gombe State University for providing a conducive learning environment, noting that the institution continues to distinguish itself among Nigeria’s leading state universities.

Maryam Usman’s achievement marks a significant milestone for the Department of Political Science and the university at large, setting a new academic standard and inspiring future generations of students, especially young women, to pursue excellence without limits.

Her story stands as a powerful reminder that greatness can emerge from unexpected paths—and that with faith, determination, and support, barriers can be broken.
