The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof Adamu Ahmed, has called for stronger measures to curb examination malpractice among students. He stressed the need to uphold integrity across the academic system.

Prof Ahmed made this call while declaring open a one-day workshop on teaching and examination ethics. The Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring organized the event in collaboration with the Postgraduate College and the Committee of Deans and Directors.

He commended staff for their dedication and noted that students’ success reflects their efforts. However, he stressed that teaching goes beyond passing knowledge. According to him, it also shapes students’ character and future.

Therefore, he urged lecturers to reduce exam malpractice through proper training and awareness of its consequences.

The Vice-Chancellor also warned against treating examinations as a “do or die” affair. Instead, he encouraged a more balanced and ethical approach.

He further urged Deans and Directors to lead by example. He asked participants to share ideas and develop practical solutions to strengthen academic integrity.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Raymond Bako, said the workshop promotes collaboration, not punishment. He added that the goal is to improve teaching quality and strengthen the value of ABU degrees.

Earlier, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof Bello Mukhtar, described the workshop as a step toward world-class teaching standards.

In addition, the Chairperson of the Committee of Deans and Directors, Prof Maryam Aminu, praised the Vice-Chancellor’s inclusive leadership. She called on stakeholders to support efforts to raise academic standards.

The workshop, held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, marks a major step toward promoting ethics, professionalism, and excellence at ABU.
