The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has clarified that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is free to make his own political decisions, including joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) or remaining in the NNPP, without seeking approval from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s former leader and 2023 presidential candidate.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NNPP leadership emphasized that Yusuf does not need Kwankwaso’s blessing to leave the party if he chooses, nor does he require it to continue serving as an NNPP governor. The party also reassured the public that it would not obstruct his decision while encouraging him to reconsider staying within the party.

The clarification follows a period of confusion over conflicting reports about Kwankwaso’s stance on Yusuf’s rumored defection to the APC. The NNPP, through its National Secretary Comrade Ogini Olaposi, described media reports suggesting Kwankwaso had endorsed the move as misinformation spread by those seeking to justify defections within the party.

Political Rift in Kano State: What Happened Before

This development is part of a broader political saga in Kano State and the NNPP that has escalated in recent weeks. Reports indicate that Governor Yusuf was in advanced talks to join the APC, a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections. Aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s ruling party could strengthen the APC’s position in Nigeria’s most populous state.

The situation has been complicated by conflicting narratives about Kwankwaso’s position. Some media outlets reported that Kwankwaso had endorsed Yusuf’s planned defection, a claim that would mark a major shift from his earlier opposition. Kwankwaso’s camp, however, quickly denied these reports, stating that no endorsement had been made and labeling the coverage as misleading. He also expressed concern over pressure on party officials in Kano to support Yusuf’s camp, warning that coercion would undermine the mandate given to voters.

Despite ongoing rumors, both the NNPP leadership and Kwankwaso’s spokesperson have reiterated that no formal endorsement exists. Political analysts see this as part of a larger realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with the APC aiming to absorb governors and lawmakers from opposition parties. Meanwhile, the NNPP faces internal challenges as prominent figures consider their political futures in a shifting landscape.

Implications and What This Means Going Forward

The dispute highlights growing tension within the NNPP and raises questions about party unity in Kano. While the party respects Governor Yusuf’s right to choose his political path, it also seeks to retain him, emphasizing party principles and the mandate of the voters.

If Yusuf formally defects to the APC, it could reshape Kano’s political landscape and have national implications. Alliances, party strength, and campaign strategies for the 2027 elections could all be significantly affected, signaling a critical moment in Nigeria’s political realignment.
