The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reiterated its commitment to sustained capacity building for media professionals covering the Service, as part of efforts to enhance communication clarity, professionalism, and public trust.

The assurance was given on Friday, during the NCS end-of-year media parley held in Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking at the engagement, the National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Abdullahi Maiwada, said continuous engagement and training of journalists and media practitioners were critical to ensuring accurate and informed reportage of Customs activities.

DC Maiwada noted that the Service is undergoing significant reforms and operational transformations, stressing the need for media stakeholders to be adequately informed and carried along.

“There are so many transformations within the Service, and it is important that those who cover this sector are always carried along in everything that we do,” he said.

He disclosed that media training would form a core component of the Service’s 2026 strategic communication framework, aimed at strengthening professionalism and improving the quality of Customs-related reporting.

“In our 2026 strategic communication plan, we will ensure that training is addressed across different clusters. This is part of our deliberate effort to enhance clarity and accuracy in NCS reportage,” Maiwada added.

He further emphasised the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, noting that clear and accurate communication is essential to building confidence in the operations and reforms of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The media parley featured interactive sessions where participants discussed challenges, shared experiences, and exchanged ideas on improving collaboration between the Service and the media in support of national economic growth and development.

The event also provided opportunities for networking and informal engagement among stakeholders, as the Service and media practitioners prepare for renewed collaboration in the coming year.
