The Tanimu Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will begin a nationwide membership drive on Monday. The move forms part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP said the exercise will expand its support base. It also aims to strengthen grassroots structures and attract new members ahead of the polls.

Earlier, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections. It scheduled the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls for March 6, 2027.

However, some Muslim stakeholders raised concerns because the dates fell within the Ramadan period. As a result, the Nigerian Senate amended Clause 28 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. Lawmakers reduced the mandatory election notice from 360 days to 300 days to allow changes.

Subsequently, INEC released a revised timetable. The commission moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections to January 16, 2027. It also shifted the Governorship and State Assembly polls to February 6, 2027.

Under the updated timetable, political parties must submit a full digital membership register by April 2, 2026. Some observers argue that this condition could affect opposition parties.

In response, the PDP’s National Working Committee, led by Tanimu Turaki, approved digital membership registration in all wards across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The party said the registration will start on March 2, 2026, and run for three weeks. Officials will conduct the exercise daily, except Sundays, at ward, chapter, and state offices. Special cases will be handled at the National Secretariat.

Furthermore, the party has set up a special committee to supervise the process. The National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Daka Shan, will head the committee.

The PDP urged members and the public to visit the nearest ward office to register. It also provided contact details for enquiries.

With this move, the party hopes to comply with the Electoral Act 2026. At the same time, it aims to position itself strongly for the 2027 elections.
