A Florida court has scheduled February 2027 for the trial in President Donald Trump’s multi-billion-dollar lawsuit against the BBC.

The trial date was fixed after a judge rejected the BBC’s request to delay the discovery process in the case.

Trump is suing the broadcaster for defamation over a Panorama programme that edited two parts of a speech together, allegedly making it appear that he directly encouraged supporters to storm the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

The president is seeking up to $10bn (£7.5bn) in damages, describing the edit as “false and defamatory.”

The BBC has apologised for the edit but rejected Trump’s demand for compensation and disputes the basis of the defamation claim.

Court documents indicate the broadcaster plans to file a motion to dismiss the case, arguing the Florida court lacks jurisdiction and that Trump has failed to state a valid claim.

The two-week trial is expected to take place in Miami, with the BBC maintaining it will defend the case vigorously.
